We use Dandy Horse and DT Swiss hubs for our wheel builds.
Detailed information about hubs can be found here.
Is it possible to order wheels built with hubs not included in your standard offer?
Yes, we accept custom orders for wheels with hubs outside our standard range, including models from brands such as Chris King, Onyx, Hope, and Erase.
We are also open to building wheels with hubs supplied directly by the customer, provided they are fully compatible with our rims. More details on building wheels from supplied components can be found here.
Can I order wheels with a Lefty hub or a dynamo hub?
- Yes, upon special request we can build wheels with a Lefty hub, a DT Swiss dynamo hub, or other similar hubs if provided by the customer.
Can your wheels be adapted to the Asymmetric Integration (AI) system used on some bike frames?
Yes, we offer this option.
During the wheel configuration and checkout process, please note in the “order comments” field that your frame uses the Asymmetric Integration system.
Please provide the offset value in millimeters, as well as the manufacturer, model, and year of the frame.
When building AI-specific wheels, we take into account the possibility of later re-centering them so they can also fit a standard frame.
Which hubs are louder – Dandy Horse or DT Swiss?
A direct comparison of hub noise is difficult, as it depends on many factors, the most important being rim material and depth, as well as the amount and type of grease used in the freehub mechanism.
Generally, the noise levels are similar, though the sound characteristics may differ slightly between the two hub types.
Is it possible to order wheels with a silent freehub?
Yes, we can build wheels with Onyx hubs, which are known for their silent operation.
Please note, however, that silent Onyx hubs are relatively expensive and heavier compared to the hubs in our standard offer.
The usual lead time for wheels with Onyx hubs is 4–6 weeks.
Do the bearings used in your hubs have additional seals to protect against contamination?
Yes, all bearings used in our hubs come with seals designed to protect their interiors from dirt, dust, sand, and moisture.
However, no solution provides 100% protection against water ingress, so washing your bike with water can still damage the bearings.
Rims
What does it mean when you say that Dandy Horse designs its own rims?
The wheels in our range are built on rims whose profiles we have designed ourselves, in collaboration and consultation with experienced engineers in this field.
Based on these proprietary designs, production molds were created, to which we hold exclusive rights.
This ensures our wheels have unique properties and design, and no other cycling brand offers identical models.
More details about our rims can be found here.
What is the Double Hook technology used in your rims, and what benefits does it bring?
Double Hook technology reinforces the rim edge on both the inner and outer sides.
These reinforcements are designed to protect the rim against damage caused by hard impacts, for example when riding in demanding terrain.
Additionally, the inner hook helps secure the tire bead on the rim, reducing the risk of it rolling off even at relatively high air pressures.
How does rim width affect the ride characteristics of a wheel?
The internal rim width directly affects how the tire sits, which in turn influences key parameters such as grip, comfort, and rolling resistance. More details about internal rim width are available here.
The external rim width plays a key role in the wheel’s aerodynamic properties.
What factors should I consider when choosing the optimal rim depth for my needs?
If your top priority is minimizing rotational weight, we recommend wheels with lower-profile rims.
If your main goal is improving aerodynamic performance and achieving a more striking visual appearance, higher-profile rims are worth considering.
Is it true that the rims used in Dandy Horse wheels are manufactured in China?
Yes, our rims—like over 90% of carbon bicycle rims worldwide—are manufactured in China.
Carbon rim production outside China and Taiwan is on a much smaller scale, making such products several times more expensive.
If it is a priority for you to own rims produced outside China and you have the appropriate budget, please contact us – we will gladly prepare a custom offer tailored to your requirements.
Why should I buy wheels from you if carbon rims can be purchased much cheaper on Chinese marketplaces?
While it is possible to buy rims through such platforms, their quality often leaves much to be desired.
Remember: not all rims are created equal, even if they look identical at first glance. Poor-quality rims may have uneven wall thicknesses, which can cause wheels to lose true during use.
When you buy Dandy Horse carbon wheels, you receive not only a high-quality product but also a lifetime warranty, a crash replacement program, and professional after-sales support.
Ordering from a Chinese platform means buying “blind,” with no certainty about the parameters or durability of the product.
However, if you decide to source rims independently, we encourage you to contact us – we will be happy to suggest which manufacturers and suppliers can be trusted to avoid disappointment.
Spokes and Nipples
What types and brands of spokes do you use to build your wheels?
We use spokes from the Belgian brand Sapim, available in aero (bladed) and double-butted round variants.
Each spoke model has unique characteristics that influence overall wheel performance.
For example, Sapim CX-Sprint spokes are an excellent choice for racers and riders seeking aerodynamic benefits, while the Race model offers a versatile balance between low weight and high durability.
To help you make the best choice, we’ve prepared a detailed [article on spokes] available on our blog.
Can I choose the color of spokes and nipples?
By default, our wheels come with black spokes.
If you prefer silver spokes, please let us know when placing your order.
We also offer nipples in various colors, allowing you to further customize the look of your wheels.
Are nipples in your wheels secured against loosening during riding?
We deliberately avoid using threadlock or chemical adhesives on nipples, as these make future truing more difficult.
Instead, on the wheel side with lower spoke tension, we use special self-locking nipples that prevent loosening.
The key factor is correct and even spoke tension across the wheel – this is the main safeguard against nipples working loose.
Tires and Tubeless System
Which tire models do you recommend for Dandy Horse wheels?
Tire choice is highly individual and depends on many factors such as riding style, terrain type, weather conditions, and rider preference.
Each rider should select the tire model that best matches their own needs and expectations.
Are all Dandy Horse wheels tubeless-ready?
Yes, all Dandy Horse wheels are fully compatible with tubeless systems.
Every wheel leaving our workshop is already taped with tubeless rim tape.
What is the recommended tire pressure for Dandy Horse wheels?
To precisely calculate optimal tire pressure based on rider+bike+luggage weight, tire width, and terrain conditions, we highly recommend using the pressure calculator available in this article.
Service and Wheelbuilding
Do you provide wheel servicing?
We only service wheels that we have built ourselves.
We accept wheels for service only in cases requiring major repairs, such as hub, spoke, or rim replacement.
Routine maintenance, freehub servicing, or bearing replacement can be handled by any professional bicycle workshop. A list of workshops we cooperate with can be found here.
Please note: warranty requirements specify that spoke tension adjustments must be performed only by workshops equipped with a precise and calibrated tensiometer.
How often should wheels be serviced?
We recommend servicing wheels at least once a year.
For intensive use – e.g., racing conditions or frequent exposure to water – servicing should be done more often.
Do you repair damaged carbon rims?
- No, damaged rims are replaced with new ones.
Czy mogę wysłać do Was koła innej marki na serwis lub przegląd?
We offer spoke replacement and wheel rebuilding, but we do not true wheels from other manufacturers.
We have all the necessary tools to check wheels. Inspections are carried out on a “pay what you wish” basis, with donations going to a collection box supporting local animal shelters.
